The Russian Defense Ministry announced that Minister Sergei Shoigu and his French counterpart Sebastien Licornu discussed in their first phone call today the situation of the Zaporozhye nuclear plant in Ukraine.
The Russian Defense Ministry said in a statement reported by the Russia Today website that Shoigu informed Licorno during the call, which took place at the initiative of the French side, of the Russian assessments of the Ukrainian army’s actions that pose a threat to the safe operation of the plant.
The two sides underlined the importance of IAEA staff visiting the Zaporozhye plant and preparing to provide the necessary assistance to the agency’s inspectors.
Russian President Vladimir Putin said during a telephone conversation with French President Emmanuel Macron last week that Ukraine’s bombing of the Zaporozhye nuclear plant threatens to cause a large-scale catastrophe.
