Shakkour: Terrorism and foreign interference in Syria’s affairs aim at undermining Syria’s national identity and cultural heritage
PARIS, (ST)- Through their flagrant interference in Syria’s internal affairs, their occupation of parts of Syrian land and their support for terrorism, the countries, which have been adopting hostile policies towards Syria, aim at undermining the Syrians’ national identity and creative abilities, inherited throughout generations, and at dissipating the country’s intangible cultural heritage, Syria’s Permanent Representative at the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization (UNESCO), Lamia Shakkour stressed.
In a statement during the activities of the 8th Session of the General Assembly of the States Parties to the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, adopted in Paris in 2003, Shakkour said that the unilateral coercive measures imposed by the United States and countries of the European Union on Syria have directly affected UNESCO’s work, impeded cooperation within the framework of the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage and badly hurt the Syrian living cultural heritage.
Syria welcomes the reform efforts of the Convention for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, specifically those related to showing the links between the intangible cultural heritage and the Sustainable Development goals, Shakkour said.
She hailed the Global Program for Capacity Building for the Safeguarding of the Intangible Cultural Heritage, calling for the encouragement of the ongoing efforts to improve the process of putting cultural items on the list of intangible cultural heritage of humanity.
She pointed out that the cooperation between UNESCO and the Secretariat of the Convention with the Syrian Ministry of Culture and with local community organizations has achieved tremendous steps towards increasing the awareness of individuals and societies about the importance of preserving the living heritage, as well as establishing local, national and international partnerships in this regard.
