Security Council is due to vote on a draft resolution on Gaza amid threat of new US veto

The International Security Council voted today on a draft resolution prepared by Algeria weeks ago demanding an immediate ceasefire in Gaza despite threat of a new US veto.

According to the France Press Agency, the draft resolution calls for “an immediate humanitarian ceasefire that all parties must respect”, and the text opposes “the forced displacement of Palestinian civilians”.

For his part, the First Russian Deputy Permanent Representative to the UN, Dmitry Polyanskiy , suggested that Washington would use its veto for a new time in the Security Council against stopping the Israeli aggression on Gaza.

Polyanskiy wrote on his Telegram channel today: “The UN Security Council will vote on the draft resolution submitted by Algeria to demand an immediate ceasefire in Gaza. The United States is not satisfied with this draft, and they will use their veto, which will be the fourth since the beginning of the escalation on October 7 of last year”.

Polyanskiy considered that “every time Washington uses its veto for this purpose is a blow to the reputation of the United States in the world, especially in the Middle East”.

The United States, in turn, considered the Algerian text unacceptable, and the US Deputy Ambassador to the United Nations, Robert Wood, confirmed that the draft resolution would not pass.

The American mission distributed an alternative draft resolution that talks about “a temporary ceasefire in Gaza as soon as possible based on a formula that includes the release of all hostages”, in order to satisfy the Israeli entity and be consistent with its policies.
