Berlin (ST): German Chancellor Olaf Schultz expressed his support for the decision issued by the North Atlantic Treaty Organization (NATO) at its summit held in the middle of last year not to accept Ukraine and Georgia as members of the alliance.
Last Tuesday, Ukrainian President Vladimir Zelensky called on NATO countries to establish joint security guarantees for his country, given the alliance’s refusal to grant Ukraine membership.
RIA Novosti news agency quoted Schultz as saying in an interview with German TV channel ZDF,. “This decision was correct and came after very long negotiations within the alliance on this issue,” in reference to the NATO summit held last June.
At the summit, NATO considered that Ukraine and Georgia had the right in principle to join the alliance, but it refused to set a timetable for that and stressed that the two countries should implement reforms before achieving this.
