Sanctions imposed on Syria impede its efforts to fight coronavirus: Gatilov

MOSCOW, (ST)-  The economic sanctions imposed by the United States and EU impede the Syrian government’s efforts to fight Covid-19 epidemic and to deliver humanitarian and medical aid to citizens who need it ,Gennady Gatilov, Russia’s Permanent Representative to the UN Office in Geneva, said in an online session of the Valdai International Discussion Club.

During the session, titled “Combating COVID-19 in Conflict: The Syrian Experience”, Gatilov urged Western diplomats to stop politicizing this file and to back Syria’s efforts in this domain and not to limit the aid to terrorist-held areas.

He hailed Syria’s relentless efforts and speedy response aimed at preventing the outbreak of the epidemic, noting that the Syrian government has opened labs, hospitals and quarantine centers in all the Syrian provinces for this purpose. He also noted appreciation of the World Health Organization for these efforts, though the country has been facing terrorist crimes that targeted all sectors including health facilities for years.

Gatilov reiterated Russia’s firm support for the UN Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pedersen’s efforts to find a political solution to the crisis in Syria.
