Sánchez: Recognizing a Palestinian state is a geopolitical interest for Europe

Madrid (ST) – Spain Prime Minister Pedro Sánchez affirmed that recognizing a Palestinian state is a geopolitical interest for Europe, reiterating that Madrid is ready to take this step.

Agence France-Presse quoted Sánchez before Spanish representatives as saying: “The international community cannot help the Palestinian state if it does not recognize its existence. Such recognition falls within the framework of Europe’ geopolitical interest, and Spain is ready to recognize the Palestinian state.”

Last week, Sánchez announced that Spain intends to do so by the end of next June.

Spokesperson of the Government of Spain Pilar Alegría said yesterday that: Sánchez will meet in the coming days with the heads of government of a number of countries, including Norway and Portugal, to talk again about the necessity of moving forward towards recognizing Palestine.

Sánchez condemned the Israeli attack on Gaza, stressing that this attack undermines decades of international humanitarian law and poses a threat to the stability of the Middle East and the entire world.
