Sabbagh: Western countries’ hostile practices towards Syria hinder the achievement of stability in it
New York, (ST) – Syria’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Ambassador Bassam Sabbagh, affirmed that Western countries’ persistence in the policies of economic terrorism and collective punishment towards Syria impede its efforts to achieve stability. He added that, the continuation of the Israeli occupation, the Turkish regime and terrorist organizations, their aggressive and destructive practices towards Syria also prevent all its efforts to achieve stability and security.
Sabbagh indicated in a session of the Security Council yesterday on the humanitarian issue in Syria that, while the Syrian government continues its efforts to achieve economic and social stability, improve the living conditions of the Syrians and facilitate the dignified, safe and voluntary return of the displaced and refugees, the practices of terrorism, aggression and destruction continue against it. “These practices are through the threats of the Turkish regime to launch new acts of aggression and the direct attack of the Israeli occupation in addition to that launched by various terrorist organizations” he said.
Sabbagh explained that the Israeli aggression on Damascus International Airport on the tenth of this June caused huge damage with the result that it went out of service. He expressed his surprise at some Western countries that continue to cover up the Israeli aggression and its effects on humanitarian work.
Sabbagh said that, “in clear coordination with the Israeli aggression, which has endangered navigation and civilian air and sea transportation, as well as the lives and safety of innocent civilians, the threats and statements of Turkish President Recep Tayyip Erdogan are escalating about his intention to launch military action on Syrian territories in the north with the aim of establishing what he calls a (Safe Zone)”.
He added that the statements of the head of the Turkish regime about his intention to launch military action on Syrian territory in the north express his aggressive policies.
Sabbagh pointed out that terrorist organizations continue to commit their crimes against Syrians, the latest of which was a terrorist attack yesterday morning on a civilian passenger bus on the Raqqa-Homs road, which led to the death of eleven soldiers and two civilians and the wounding of others.
Sabbagh explained that the countries that directly and indirectly refused to implement resolution 2585, which was unanimously adopted by the Security Council a year ago, as a result of its members’ agreement to take serious and steps to enhance humanitarian access from inside Syrian territories, are mobilizing empty media today, calling for the renewal of this resolution although in recent months they have stood behind its failure.
Sabbagh stressed that Syria holds the United States, Britain and France fully responsible for the failure to implement the core pillars of Resolution 2585, and stresses the need not to be drawn into the misleading and deceitful campaigns promoted by those countries claiming that extending the resolution is an inevitable necessity. He considered that putting pressure on humanitarian organizations in the United Nations to issue statements that they themselves know are incorrect is surprising and rejected.
Sabbagh renewed his call for an immediate and unconditional cessation of the policies of economic terrorism and collective punishment represented by the unilateral coercive measures imposed by the United States of America and the European Union on the Syrian people. He affirmed that whoever stands with the Syrian people does not impose on them inhumane economic sanctions.
Sabbagh called on the Security Council and the Secretary-General to assume their responsibilities to stop the aggressive actions directed against Syria’s sovereignty, independence, unity and territorial integrity. He also called on to end the illegal foreign military presence on its lands. He stressed that it is unacceptable for the Security Council to remain silent in view of all these violations of the Charter of the United Nations.
