Sabbagh: Western countries have turned the Security Council into a platform for spreading lies against Syria
New York (ST): Syria’s permanent representative to the United Nations, Bassam Sabbagh, confirmed that some Western countries have turned the Security Council into a platform for spreading lies against Syria regarding its cooperation with the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons and presenting an incorrect image, stressing that Syria voluntarily joined the OPCW agreement and fulfilled during a record period all its obligations resulting from this accession.
During a session of the Security Council, Sabbagh stated that Syria has repeatedly expressed its strong condemnation of the use of chemical weapons by anyone, anywhere and under any circumstances, and its assertion that it no longer possesses any type of these weapons, noting that the campaign against Syria, aims at diverting the attention of the international community from the use of these weapons by terrorist organizations while continuing to provide protection and care for them.
Sabbagh pointed out that the misleading American statements against Syria in this regard are clear evidence of the continuation of the American administration in its aggressive approach that it began more than ten years ago by using its various puppet tools to wage a fierce war against the Syrian people at all levels. He stressed that the paradox is that one of the leading countries of the aggressive approach, the United States is the only state party to the agreement that has not yet implemented its obligations under the Ban Treaty to end the destruction of its chemical weapons arsenal.
Sabbagh reiterated that Syria voluntarily joined the Chemical Weapons Convention and fulfilled, during a record period, all the obligations resulting from this accession, and was keen on continuous cooperation with the Organization for the Prohibition to close this file permanently and within the shortest time, as it submitted its 93rd monthly report on the activities related to the destruction of Chemical weapons and their production facilities.
Sabbagh stressed that rather than acknowledging the unprecedented measures in dealing with the chemical file in Syria and the resort to manipulating the provisions of the agreement and the establishment of illegal mechanisms that exceed the obligations imposed on the states parties to the Ban Treaty in addition to ignoring Syria’s cooperation and the progress that has been achieved until now- it has also set unworkable conditions and passing a resolution at the 25th session of the Conference of the States members of the OPCW against Syria constitutes a dangerous development in the course of the organization’s work and is inconsistent with its charter. It clearly demonstrates the great politicization that this file has reached, the lack of credibility of the reports issued on it, and the loss of objectivity and professionalism from aspects of its work.
