Damascus (ST) – Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Bassam Sabbagh received the UN Under-Secretary-General for Peace Operations Jean-Pierre Lacroix, the UN Major General Nirmal Thapa, and the accompanying delegation.
During the meeting, the two sides discussed what UNDOF is doing in the separation zone, and the facilitations provided by the Syrian government to help the UNDOF fulfil its mandate in accordance with the relevant Security Council resolution.
Sabbagh stressed the need for urgent UN action to stop the continuous Israeli violations against the people in the occupied Syrian Golan since 1967, and to put an end to the repeated Israeli attacks on infrastructure and vital facilities.
He said that it is important that the Peace Operations mission’s reports include accurate monitoring of these attacks and violations.
For his part, Lacroix stressed the visit’s objectives represented by reviewing the work of the UNDOF, visiting its sites, and holding meetings with the relevant Syrian officials.
He pointed to the UN’s efforts to avoid any escalation in the region, thanking the Syrian government for the facilitations it has provided to UNDOF to make its work a success.
The meeting was attended by Syria’s permanent representative to the UN Ambassador Qusay Al-Dahhak, the head of the Truce Delegation Office, Brigadier General Azdshir Hourani, and Minister Counselor Safwan Barakat from the Department of International Organizations.
