Sabbagh: The new Western French draft resolution submitted to the OPCW Conference aims at creating pretexts to commit aggressive acts against Syria

Syria’s Permanent Representatives to the United Nations Bassam Sabbagh has stressed that the draft resolution submitted by France and western countries to the Conference of the countries member in the Organization for the Prohibition of Chemical Weapons (OPCW) is a new violation of the Chemical Weapons Convention (CWC) as it promotes false conclusions with the aim of creating pretexts for committing aggressive acts against Syria and encouraging the terrorist organizations to stage chemical attacks in order to accuse the Syrian Arab Army of using chemical weapons against civilians.

The US, French and British pressure practiced with the aim of illegally establishing the so-called Investigation and identification Team (IIT) and then covering up its unprofessional practices and depending on its misleading report to submit such a draft resolution to the OPCW conference, provides evidence about these countries’ plan to target Syria after turning the OPCW into a platform to pass their aggressive policies, Sabbagh said during a Security Council online session held on Friday upon a Russian initiative.

He described the IIT report about Syria as “ridiculous” as it shows how much these western countries control the work of the OPCW and use this organization to serve their political goals, a behavior that undermines the technical nature of the OPCW’s work.

In its conclusion the report falsely accused the Syrian army of using chemical materials during its operations in the Syrian city of Saraqib in 2018.

Sabbagh reiterated that Syria rejects all the false accusations made against it and renews its call on all influential countries in the international community to work hard as to uncover and belie these allegations and not to allow transforming the OPCW into a platform for the United States and its allies to practice more pressure and promote lies with the aim of targeting a state that is member in the CWC.

He stressed that voting against this draft resolution will not only serve Syria but all the member countries which defend the principles of the CWC and other international standards.

He emphasized that some western countries continue their irresponsible behavior towards Syria through repeating the same scenarios and covering up the terrorist organizations’ use of chemical weapons against the Syrians by falsely accusing the Syrian government of such crimes and creating pretexts to keep the Syrian chemical file open. He pointed out that these countries always question Syria’s cooperation with the OPCW  and deliberately ignore the success achieved in the chemical file in Syria, noting Syria’s continuous cooperation with the OPCW work and commitment to the CWC principles.
