Sabbagh stresses the necessity of building a multipolar global system to face  challenges

NEW YORK, Sep.26, (ST)-Syria has called for lifting  coercive measures being imposed on it and on a number of countries as it is considered economic terrorism.

Ambassador Bassam Sabbagh, the head of the Syrian delegation to the 78th session of the UNSC said that the world is witnessing serious challenges, foremost of which is fueling devastating conflicts in several regions, the continued occupation and the spread of terrorism, which requires cooperation among member states to build a new multipolar world order.

He added that US policies of creative chaos led to the destabilization of security and stability in our region and caused the emergence of terrorism and the destruction of development achievements. Multilateralism, the Charter of the UN, and other international agreements were not spared from this chaos, he noted.

Ambassador Sabbagh highlighted that “Israel” continues to violate the UN Charter and international humanitarian law by occupying Arab lands, including the Syrian Golan, establishing settlements, changing the demographics, plundering resources, and seizing lands.

Sabbagh stressed that Syria reaffirms its right to restore the entire occupied Golan, which is an inalienable right, that is not subject to bargaining, guaranteed by international law and relevant UN resolutions.

“Syria has not and will not spare any effort to stand by the Palestinian people in their struggle to restore their rights, especially their right to establish their independent state with Jerusalem as its capital, and to grant Palestine full membership in the UN,” Sabbagh said.

He went on to say that the repeated Israeli attacks on Syrian cities, ports, and civilian airports are pushing the region to unprecedented levels of tension, and Syria condemns these attacks and denounces the support of some countries that declare themselves protectors of international humanitarian law for these practices.

The diplomat underlined that the US and Turkey continue their destructive role and violate Syrian sovereignty, unity and safety of its territory through their continued illegal presence and support to separatist militias and terrorist organizations,

He affirmed that the US looting of the Syrian people such as oil, gas and wheat deprived them of their resources, with total oil sector losses exceeded $ 115 billion.

Sabbagh pointed out  that upgrading humanitarian situation in Syria requires sustainable solutions to support its people, especially after the earthquake disaster, which is related to increasing early recovery projects, reducing humanitarian assistance

Sabbagh stressed that Syria has  spared no effort to stand by the Palestinian people in their struggle to restore their rights, especially the right to establish an independent state with Jerusalem as its capital and to grant the full membership of Palestine in the United Nations.

“The world is witnessing serious challenges, most notably the outbreak of devastating conflicts in several regions, the continued occupation and the spread of terrorism, which requires cooperation among member states to build a new multipolar world order,” he added.

Sabbagh pointed out that the basic principle of  the United Nations Charter affirms the need to respect the sovereignty and independence of member states and the unity and integrity of their territories. Therefore, any acquisition of the lands of others by force is an occupation, and any illegal military presence on the lands of any sovereign state is a clear violation of this Charter and a violation of the United Nations Charter, and it  must end immediately and unconditionally,

“Accordingly, Israel’s occupation of the Arab lands in Palestine and the Syrian Golan since 1967 until now, and the consequent establishment of settlements, and a change in the demographic composition and institutional structure, especially through attempts to forcefully impose (Israeli nationality) on the people of the occupied Golan, not to mention the plundering of the resources of the Golan, the seizure of Syrian farmers’ lands to build huge wind turbines on them, and other documented violations are the most heinous forms of grave and systematic violations of the United Nations Charter and international humanitarian law,” he said

Sabbagh reaffirmed Syria’s legitimate right to restore the entire occupied Golan up to the line of June 4, 1967, no matter how long it takes, saying that this is an inalienable right that is not subject to bargaining or pressure.

Moreover, the diplomat said: “ Syria was one of the most stable and prosperous countries in the world, and it achieved food self-sufficiency and provided all the basic requirements of life for its people in a way that was unparalleled in the region, but the terrorist war launched against it since 2011 changed this situation and caused a significant humanitarian crisis. The severity of the situation was increased by the imposition of unilateral coercive measures. Recently, the devastating earthquake that struck Syria last February added a new burden and suffering, as it destroyed hundreds of buildings, infrastructure, and service facilities, caused thousands of victims and injuries, and made tens of thousands homeless.”

He emphasized that Syria continues with its limited capabilities, to make every effort to deal with the effects of the earthquake in the four affected governorates.

Sabbagh expressed Syria’s solidarity with the Libyan people and its support for them in facing the repercussions of the hurricane and floods that struck them, as well as with the Moroccan people as a result of the devastating earthquake that struck them.

He in addition reiterated Syria’s support for Russia’s right to defend itself and protect its national security in response to aggressive Western policies, because it is not only defending itself but also the right of all of us to reject the logic of Western and unipolar hegemony, noting Iran’s constructive and responsible approach regarding returning to the comprehensive plan of action. He called on the United States and its Western allies to meet Iran’s legitimate demands.

Sabbagh affirmed Syria’s support for the “One China” principle, and its support for Beijing’s positions, in the face of attempts at external interference in its internal affairs, whether in Taiwan, Hong Kong, or Xinjiang, and stresses the inalienable right of the People’s Republic of China to take whatever measures and steps it decides to defend. Its sovereignty, especially in the face of the unprecedented escalation and the policy of provocation practiced by the United States against it.

He  expressed Syria’s condemnation of the economic blockade imposed on Cuba for decades, including the US administration’s extension of the so-called (Trade with the Enemy Law), referring to the necessity of stopping the military movements and exercises conducted by the United States on the Korean Peninsula, which lead to an escalation of tension in that area.

Sabbagh concluded by saying that the platform of the United Nations General Assembly was created to be a platform for dialogue and public diplomacy among member states, and not a platform for launching false accusations or launching hostile campaigns against each other.
