Sabbagh stresses the importance of ensuring funding for UNRWA to continue its work in supporting the Palestinian people

Damascus (ST) – Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Bassam Sabbagh stressed the importance of ensuring funding for the United Nations Relief and Works Agency for Palestine Refugees (UNRWA) as to continue playing its role in supporting the Palestinian people and their legitimate rights, expressing appreciation for the important work done by the agency in Syria.

During his meeting today in the ministry building with the Deputy Commissioner-General of UNRWA in the Near East Natalie Boucly, Sabbagh notef the failure of the hostile campaigns carried out by the Israeli occupation entity, the United States and some of its allied countries against UNRWA, aimed at ending the agency’s services it provides to the Palestinian people.

He indicated that the report of the Independent Review Committee on the agency’s work conclusively demonstrated the neutrality and integrity of UNRWA, and acknowledged its indispensable role in supporting the rights of the Palestinian people.

Sabbagh expressed satisfaction over the resumption of funding for the agency by a number of countries after they had suspended it based on the allegations of the Israeli occupation and the incitement campaign it promoted against UNRWA, stressing the importance of ensuring the necessary funding for the agency to continue carrying out its work.

For her part, Boucly expressed her thanks and appreciation for the facilities provided by Syria to UNRWA, and presented the efforts made by the agency in assisting Palestinian refugees in Syria, and its continued endeavor to address the financial crisis it is facing as a result of the severe lack of funding.
