Sabbagh says the Armenians in Syria have become part of the Syrian fabric

DAMASCUS, (ST)- Speaker of the People’s Assembly (PA) Hammouda Sabbagh has stressed that Syria hosted a large number of Armenians who survived the Ottoman massacre, reiterating that the Armenians in Syria have become part of the Syrian fabric.

Sabbagh made the remarks during his meeting on Wednesday with the Armenian Ambassador in Damascus Dikran Kevorkian.

He pointed out that the People’s Assembly has unanimously adopted a historic decision condemning and recognizing the Armenian genocide.

The meeting also focused on enhancing parliamentary relations between Syria and Armenia.

 The PA Speaker said that the relations between the two countries are deep-rooted and they need to be strengthened in order to serve the interests of the peoples of both countries.

On his part, Kevorkian thanked the Syrian People’s Assembly for its recent decision to recognize the genocide committed against the Armenian people by the Ottoman state early in the 20th century.

He called on all countries of the world to adopt similar stances that would prevent repeating such crimes.

The Armenian Ambassador reiterated his country’s support for and solidarity with Syria in its fight against terrorism, congratulating the Syrians and the Syrian army on the victories that have recently been achieved over terrorist groups in Aleppo.
