Sabbagh discusses with UNDP Executive Director Ways to enhance cooperation between Syria and the program
During a meeting in New York, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Bassam Sabbagh discussed with the Executive Director of the United Nations Development Program Achim Steiner the aspects of existing cooperation the Syrian Arab Republic and the program, and ways to develop cooperation and enhance the program’s activities in Syria, especially with regard to expanding early recovery projects and supporting resilience.
Minister Sabbagh pointed to the significant shortfall in funding for humanitarian and development activities in Syria, at a time when needs are increasing significantly. This requires doubling efforts to provide necessary funding. This requires doubling efforts to provide the necessary funding and urging donors to fulfill their pledges, on the one hand, and the necessity of lifting the unilateral coercive measures imposed by the United States of America and the European Union on Syria, which greatly hinder the activities of the United Nations and its agencies, including those undertaken by the program in Syria.
For his part, Steiner stressed the programme’s keenness to continue cooperation and coordination with the Syrian government, and to do everything possible to enhance its activities in Syria to meet the growing needs, especially in light of the current circumstances in the region.
