Vienna (ST) – Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Bassam Sabbagh discussed with Rafael Mariano Grossi, Director General of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA), in Vienna today, the cooperation between Syria and the agency in a number of fields, including support for the Syrian National Committee to Combat Cancer.
In the presence of Dr. Ibrahim Othman, Director General of the Syrian Atomic Energy Commission, and on the sidelines of their participation in the work of the International Conference on “Nuclear Security, Shaping the Future of Icons 2024,” Sabbagh and Grossi also discussed ways to enhance the technical support provided to Syria by the Agency, especially capacity building and qualification of cadres.
Sabbagh expressed his appreciation for the efforts made by the IAEA in preparing well for the work of the International Conference on Nuclear Security, as well as in providing support and assistance to member states.
Earlier today, the Ministerial Conference on Nuclear Security began with the participation of 130 countries, including Syria. The conference discusses nuclear security issues, the most important of which is preventing nuclear and radioactive materials from reaching the hands of terrorist organizations, in addition to enhancing international cooperation in the field of nuclear security.
