Sabbagh criticizes western countries’ continuous attempts to falsify facts to evade responsibility for the Syrians’ suffering

Syria’s Permanent Representative to the United Nations Bassam Sabbagh has criticized the continuous attempts by western countries to falsify facts and mislead the public opinion in order to evade responsibility for shedding the blood of the Syrians and for exacerbating their suffering through supporting terrorism and imposing unfair blockade on them.

These countries keep claiming that they are keen on preserving Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity, but they never took any action to stop the Israeli repeated attacks on the Syrian territories or lift their illegal coercive measures to help Syria address the repercussions of the earthquake, Sabbagh said in a statement on Thursday during a Security Council session on the political and humanitarian situation in Syria.

Sabbagh clarified that during the past 12 years, Syria sent hundreds of letters to the Security Council and the UN Secretary General informing them about the repeated acts of aggression and violations that target its sovereignty and territorial integrity and about continuous attempts to interfere in its internal affairs, but these letters were ignored because of the destructive policies of the three permanent members states of the Security Council; United States, France and Britain.

He said that the joint statement issued by the three states plus Germany on March 16th falsified facts and manipulated events and it is consistent with the misleading campaigns that have been launched by these countries against Syria since 2011. He pointed out that, through their joint statement, these countries aimed at evading responsibility for shedding the blood of the Syrians and for their suffering either through direct aggression or through supporting terrorist organizations.

He pointed out that these countries are expressing their concern over the illicit trafficking of drug, forgetting that they themselves are the parties that created a suitable environment for the terrorist organizations to carry out their cross-border activities, which brought them huge financial returns that contributed to financing their criminal operations.

Sabbagh said that some permanent member states in the Security Council provide protection for Israel and help it escape accountability for its crimes and they insist on preventing the Council from assuming its responsibilities to stop these crimes. He also said that the visit of the US Chief of Staff to the US occupation’s military base in the northeast of Syria on March 4th blatantly violates Syria’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity, yet the Security Council didn’t condemn it.

Sabbagh added that it is difficult to believe the claims of the United States and its allies about real contribution to counter-terrorism efforts and the implementation of the Security Council’s relevant resolutions while it supports the terrorists in Al-Tanf base and promotes a terrorist group such as the “White Helmets” as a humanitarian organization.

Sabbagh pointed out that Syria calls for distancing the issue of human rights protection from any political considerations, but some parties still insist on politicizing this issue, noting an organized campaign led by the United States to raise the issue of the missing in Syria seeking to launch another politicized international mechanism that aims at falsifying facts and increasing pressure on a country that fought terrorism on behalf of all countries of the world.

“Any credible move to uncover the destiny of the mission in Syria requires uncovering the destiny of thousands of people who went missing as a result of the airstrikes conducted by the US-led coalition on Syrian towns and villages. It also requires knowing the destiny of those who wet missing in attacks carried out over the past 10 years by terrorist organizations blacklisted by the security council, such as ISIS, Jabhat Al-Nusra and other terror groups,” the Syrian diplomat clarified.

He made it clear that in accordance with its constitution and laws, Syria is committed to implementing the procedures related to searching for the missing and is sparing non effort to identify their places, including through cooperation with the Astana format for uncovering the destiny of the missing who are held by the terrorist groups.

Sabbagh affirmed that some countries continued to politicize humanitarian issues when addressing with the repercussions of the earthquake that hist Syria and Turkey, noting the preparations for holding  the so-called “Donors’ Conference for supporting earthquake victims in Syria and Turkey” without inviting Syria or coordinating with the Syrian government which represent the country where the disaster took place.

He also said that politicization of the humanitarian and developmental work in Syria can be reflected in the insistence of the United States and the European Union to continue imposing illegal coercive measures on the Syrian people which impeded efforts to secure requirements of the search and rescue operations and provide relief aid to the affected people.  He stressed that the claims promoted by western countries about exceptions for humanitarian purposes are refuted by facts on the ground which prove that these so-called exceptions are nothing but a propaganda.
