Syria’s permanent representative to the United Nations Bassam Sabbagh has reiterated Syria’s rejection of foreign intervention in the work of the committee that discusses the Syrian constitution or any attempt to impose timetables and premature conclusions on its work or on other Syrian-Syrian issues.
Speaking in the session of the UN Security Council that was held on Tuesday, Sabbagh said that the Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Faisal Al-Miqdad indicated in his speech yesterday that Syria has been open to all true and neutral initiatives and political efforts to help overcome the crisis despite the obstacles put by the countries that have no interest in the continuity of these efforts that lead to achieve stability in Syria and preserve its national principles.
He referred to the fact that Syria continues its cooperation with the UN Secretary General’s Special Envoy for Syria Geir Pederson and welcomed him in Damascus on September 11 and 12 where constructive talks were held.
“We listened today to his briefing and we welcome his determination to call for holding the 6th round of the discussion of the Syrian constitution in Geneva next October,” Sabbagh added, asserting the importance of keeping on conveying what is happening in an objective, honest and neutral way.
He went on to say that the recent achievements in Daraa regarding settlements and the reconciliation process prove Syria’s keenness on restoring security and stability to all parts of the country with guaranteeing the safety of its citizens and saving the lives of innocent people.
Sabbagh underscored that the war imposed on Syria by well-known countries through various and different means has claimed the lives of many civilians and caused damage to ancient civilizational achievements and the loss of prestigious developmental gains obtained by the Syrian people throughout many decades.
He asserted the need for putting an end to that war and the illegitimate foreign military presence on Syrian territory represented by the presence of the US occupation forces in northeastern Syria and the Turkish occupation forces in the northwest.
Sabbagh appealed to the UN Security Council to fulfil it duty related to ending the Turkish regime’s aggressive and hostile practices in Syria.
He in addition called for removing the unilateral coercive economic measures being imposed by the US and the European Union on Syria and supporting the efforts of the Syrian state and its allies in the war against terrorism.
Sabbagh regretted that the suffering of the Syrian people is being exploited to achieve purposes that have nothing to do with human goals and Syria people’s interests.
