Syria , Russia sign MOU on  peaceful  uses of atomic energy

On the sidelines of the international forum “ATOMEXPO-2024,” held in the city of Sochi, Syria and Russia on Tuesday signed a memorandum of understanding MOU between Atomic Energy Commission of Syria (AECS) and Rosatom  State Atomiс Energy Corporation (ROSATOM) in the field of peaceful uses of atomic energy.

Director of AECS  Ibrahim Othman, said in a statement to SANA: “Based on the cooperation agreement in the field of peaceful uses of atomic energy signed between Syria and Russia, and on the memorandum of understanding on peaceful applications in non-energy fields, an implementation plan has been drawn up for this agreement that includes the supply of some radioactive isotopes to Syria as well as some isotopes used in non-destructive testing that are conducted for oil pipelines, fuel tanks and aircrafts”.

Othman added: “It was also agreed to train members of the AECS to obtain three scholarship covering some of the specializations related to the peaceful uses of atomic energy”.

The agreement involved also cooperation in other fields such as plasma physics and other applications related to the peaceful uses of atomic energy.

Othman indicated that this agreement had been under discussion for a long time, and in parallel with Syria’s attendance at the “the ATOMEXPO-2024 Forum” , it was signed.

For its part, the Russian company ROSATOM said in a statement that “the memorandum includes operations and studies related to peaceful nuclear science. Non-energy related, and everything related to nuclear and radiation techniques in medicine, industry, etc”.

It is noteworthy that the Russian state company “ROSATOM ” is the main source of nuclear technology in Russia, as in 2023 it produced five sets of reactor equipment, and the fully built Belarusian nuclear power plant was delivered to the contracting party.

Under the auspices of ROSATOM company  , the three-day activities of the 13th International Forum “ATOMEXPO-2024” for nuclear energy research and developments kicked off on Monday  in the Russian city of Sochi.
