Russian Planes Will Deliver UN Humanitarian Aid to Syria’s Deir ez-Zor

A Russian air company will deliver humanitarian aid to the besieged Syrian city of Deir ez-Zor under the UN World Food Program.

MOSCOW — The delivery of humanitarian aid to the blockaded Syrian city of Deir ez-Zor under the UN World Food Program will be carried out by a Russian air company, the Russian Foreign Ministry said Wednesday.

According to the Russian Spuntik, “the UN World Food Program is ready to join efforts of the Syrian authorities and the Russian Aerospace Forces to ensure uninterrupted supply of humanitarian aid to the city of Deir ez-Zor,” the ministry said in a statement.

Some 200,000 people living under the Daesh-imposed siege in Deir ez-Zor are experiencing severe water shortages and a total lack of electricity, according to the United Nations.

“The Program’s daily deliveries of food and other humanitarian supplies [to Deir ez-Zor] will be carried out by a Russian air carrier. The logistics details are being worked out,” the statement said.

Russia has been providing humanitarian assistance to the people of Syria, including through joint efforts with the Syrian government, particularly in the besieged city of Deir ez-Zor.
