Moscow, (ST) – The Russian Foreign Ministry affirmed that Western countries, instead of working to resolve the crisis in Syria, are plundering Syrian resources and preventing the displaced from returning to their homes.
Commenting on the Brussels conference on Syria, which was held on May 27, the Russian Foreign Ministry said in a statement published on its official website today: “Washington and its allies who are illegally occupying the areas east of the Euphrates River and the area near Al-Tanf are involved in plundering Syrian natural resources, including oil and grains. At the same time, they do not care about civilians in camps within very bad conditions, such as Al-Hawl and Al-Roj.”
The Ministry indicated that the real development of events on the ground in Syria and the region shows that Western countries do not intend to carry out any construction tasks, and that the process of the voluntary return of Syrians to their homeland as well as the provision of comprehensive humanitarian aid to Syria are prohibited by the West.
The ministry said: “Washington and Brussels not only refuse to help those who wish to return, but also obstruct the implementation of early recovery projects for civilian infrastructure such as schools, hospitals, water and electricity supply facilities, and residential buildings, which is of key importance for safety and dignified returns.”
It added: The West prefers to use all possible means to keep the displaced Syrians abroad.
“The United States and the European Union are also working to increase the restrictions and sanctions on Damascus, which primarily affects ordinary Syrians who not only face the dire consequences of a long-term crisis, but also face the devastating effects of the earthquake and the damage caused by severe Covid-19 pandemic”, the ministry said.
The ministry continued: “The statements of the European Union Commissioner for Foreign and Security Policy Josep Borrell about commitment to a comprehensive political settlement in Syria with the help of the United Nations appear hypocritical, as the Europeans did not care to advance the political process led and implemented by the Syrians themselves.
The ministry said that the Representatives of the legitimate government in Syria are not invited to meetings and conferences related to their country, and now Russia is also not invited, stressing that without these two parties no serious talk can take place about a solution to the crisis in Syria.
