Russian Defense announces control of Gostomel airport on the outskirts of Kiev

Moscow (ST): The Russian Defense Ministry announced that the Russian military forces carried out a successful air landing operation yesterday in the area of Gostomel Airport on the outskirts of the Ukrainian capital, Kiev, and took control of this airport.

In a statement read out today by its spokesman, Major General Igor Konashenkov, the ministry said that more than 200 Russian helicopters participated in the operation, which silenced all air defenses in the landing area and completely isolated the combat zone from the air, in addition to conducting effective electronic warfare measures.

The statement stated that during the capture of the airport, more than 200 ultra-nationalists in the ranks of the Ukrainian special units were eliminated without incurring any losses to the Russian forces.

The ministry confirmed that the Russian forces have completed the besieging of the city of Chernigov in northern Ukraine and are taking all possible measures to prevent civilian casualties, stressing that the Russian military units continue to perform their tasks on the outskirts of the capital, Kiev, and other cities with courage and heroism.
