Russia: The presidential elections in Syria enhance its stability, and Western statements about it are political pressure and
Russia Today quoted the Russian Foreign Ministry as saying in a statement: “We consider the presidential elections to be a sovereign matter for Syria and an important step towards enhancing its internal stability, adding that the statements that came from some Western capitals regarding the illegality of the elections before they were held are part of the vicious political pressure against Damascus and a new attempt to interfere in Syria’s internal affairs with the aim of undermining its stability.”
The Russian Foreign Ministry indicated that no one has the right to dictate to the Syrians the date and conditions that they must elect their head of state,” pointing out that President Bashar al-Assad’s victory in the presidential elections was overwhelming.
The Russian Foreign Ministry affirmed that Russia will continue its steadfast approach in support of Syria’s sovereignty, independence and territorial integrity, and to provide various types of assistance for the reconstruction of the economic and social infrastructure and to reach a political solution to the crisis, led by the Syrians themselves, in accordance with UN Security Council Resolution 2254.
