Moscow (ST): Russia’s Spare Bank announced that it had thwarted a large-scale cyber-attack targeting customers’ and customers’ cards by a Ukrainian application developer who tried to write off balances through a customer database.
Russia Today website quoted Stanislav Kuznetsov, deputy chairman of the Bank’s board of directors, as saying in a statement that “the cyber attack targeted many Russian citizens who had bank cards issued by the bank after the start of the Russian military special operation,” explaining that the bank was able to thwart withdrawals of funds from its customers’ cards.
Kuznetsov confirmed that follow-up and investigations showed that the attack was launched by a Ukrainian company working on developing mobile phone applications, noting that this company, which has about 50 different official applications, collected and stored the bank card data of its customers in violation of the terms of international payment systems.
