Russia’s Aggregate Nuclear Arms Potential below New START Limit

MOSCOW – The overall potential of Russia’s strategic weapons is below the cap established by the Measures for the Further Reduction and Limitation of Strategic Offensive Arms (New START), Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Sergei Ryabkov told a news briefing ahead of the third session of the preparatory committee of the 2020 NPT Review Conference.

“The aggregate potential of Russia’s strategic weapons is even below the caps imposed on warheads under this treaty,” he said.

Ryabkov recalled that in the process of implementing the INF Treaty Russia in a goodwill gesture had exceeded its obligations in eliminating ground-based nuclear missiles.

The third session of the preparatory committee of the 2020 NPT Review Conference is due in New York on April 29 – May 10.
