Russia does not rule out Kiev sending saboteurs to Belarus, says senior diplomat

MOSCOW –  Moscow is mindful of the possibility that Ukraine may dispatch nationalist sabotage groups to Belarus in order to overthrow the current leadership, Russian Deputy Foreign Minister Mikhail Galuzin said in an interview with RTVI on Wednesday.

“In recent months, the rhetoric of members of ‘Belarusian nationalist formations’ fighting on the side of Ukraine’s armed forces in Donbass, who are being actively supported by the Kiev regime and its Western handlers, has toughened considerably. The leaders and commanders of these mercenary thugs are openly saying that in the future they plan to use their combat experience to forcibly topple the current Belarusian leadership. With this in mind, one cannot rule out the possible deployment of such sabotage groups to the republic,” he said.

The senior diplomat added that Belarusian security structures and services with the support of the regional group of forces should fully take these risks into account and, when necessary, rebuff both isolated provocations as well as any full-scale enemy invasion into the republic.

Galuzin pointed out that the deployment of the regional group of forces in Belarus is in itself a potent deterrent for Ukrainian units which are forced to maintain substantial reserves in this direction instead of redeploying them to the southeast.
