New York (ST) – Konstantin Vorontsov, Deputy Director of Arms Control and Non-Proliferation Affairs of the Russian Foreign Ministry, called on the Kiev regime and its sponsors in the West to desist from steps that could lead the world to a nuclear catastrophe.
Russia Today website quoted Vorontsov as saying during a meeting of the United Nations General Assembly: “We would like to point out the irresponsible statements of the head of the Kiev regime, Vladimir Zelensky, at the Munich Security Conference last February about the need to reconsider Ukraine’s status as a denuclearized state, which means the attempt to obtain Nuclear weapons and to damage the Nuclear Non-Proliferation Treaty system.” He added that Kiev’s recent invitation to NATO to launch a pre-emptive nuclear strike on Russia is unacceptable.
Vorontsov pointed out that it would be foolish to ignore Russian warnings to Ukraine and Western countries, and he demanded that the existing red lines in the nuclear area be observed.
He stressed that Russia believes that some Western countries could be helping Ukraine to make a dirty bomb.
“The goal is obvious, which is to accuse Russia of using weapons of mass destruction.” Vorontsov said. He added: “The Ukrainian government and its Western handlers expect that this accusation would set off a powerful anti-Russian campaign, undermine confidence in Moscow and its partners, and lead to the isolation of our country on the international stage.”
He indicated that the Ukrainian side has already begun manufacturing this bomb, pointing out that they do not rule out the assistance of some Western countries, which, according to reports, are in talks with Ukraine to supply components for the ‘dirty bomb’.
Earlier, Russian Defense Minister Sergei Shoigu, in phone calls with his counterparts in the United States, France, and Turkey, expressed his concern about Kiev’s plans to detonate a dirty bomb and accuse the Russian military.
Vorontsov stressed the need to take practical measures to launch negotiations on a comprehensive and legally binding mechanism to prevent an arms race in space with guarantees of non-deployment of weapons in space and the non-use of force or threat of force against space sites.
He added: “We call on all member states to start working as quickly as possible to establish such a mechanism in order to preserve space as a peaceful space that serves all humanity.”
