Russia calls for non-politicization and exploitation of the IAEA’s work against Syria

On March 3rd, Russia asked that  the work of the International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) not be politicised or exploited  against Syria.

Russia said that Damascus fully fulfills its obligations under the Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement and the Non-Proliferation Treaty.

During the session of the International Atomic Energy Agency Board of Governors, the Russian delegation said: “ the agency has confirmed several times in recent years that Damascus fulfills its obligations, and there is no evidence that nuclear materials have begun to be used for unauthorized purposes.”

The Russian delegation said  that there is no reason to keep this issue on the agenda of the Board of Rulers.

The Russian delegation said that “Member States should leave politicized attempts to exploit inspections of the International Atomic Energy Agency for the purpose of settling accounts with Damascus.”

Syria cooperates with the International Atomic Energy Agency in all transparency and exercises utmost flexibility regarding the implementation of the safeguard’s agreement.

The annual reports of the agency confirm Syria’s commitment and full compliance under the Comprehensive Safeguards Agreement and the Non-Proliferation Treaty.
