Rouhani, Amano Discuss Iran Nuclear Program

Tehran –President Hassan Rouhani on Sunday discussed Iranˈs nuclear program with International Atomic Energy Agency (IAEA) Director General Yukiya Amano.

Amano had also a meeting with Foreign Minister Mohammad JavadZarif earlier Sunday.

During his stay, Amano is also scheduled to meet Head of Atomic Energy Organization of Iran Ali Akbar Salehi.

Amano arrived in the Iranian capital at the head of a high-ranking delegation Sunday morning.

Iran and the IAEA deepened cooperation last November as Iran closed in on an interim nuclear deal with the six powers.

In late July and in its latest report on Iran, the IAEA confirmed Tehranˈs commitment to the interim deal it struck with Group 5+1 (the US, Russia, China, France and Britain plus Germany) in Geneva in late November, 2013.

The IAEA report showed that Iran had met the terms of the six-month agreement, under which it limited its atomic activities in exchange for some easing of sanctions.

The discussions between the IAEA and Iran are a separate track of talks from the international negotiations between Iran and six powers on Iranˈs future nuclear activities and removal of the Western sanctions.

On July 20, the deadline for reaching a final agreement on Iranˈs future nuclear activities was postponed by four months—until November 24—to give more time for diplomatic efforts.

Zarif reiterates Tehranˈs firm resolve to cooperate with IAEA

Meanwhile,  Foreign Minister Mohammad JavadZarif reiterated Tehranˈs intention to cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency in a meeting here Sunday with the visiting head of the international body.

IAEA Director General Yukiya Amano arrived here early Sunday morning for consultations on Iran-IAEA cooperation within the Cooperation Framework Agreement with top Iranian officials signed last year.

ˈIAEA is the only body internationally qualified in the field of nuclear issue,ˈZarif said in the meeting.

He stressed the need for the IAEA ˈto act in the framework of its regulations as a professional and neutral body.ˈ

Amano is in Tehran to hold separate meetings with President Hassan Rouhani and Head of Atomic Energy Organization of Iran Ali Akbar Salehi.

This is Amanoˈs 2nd visit to Iran ever since President Rouhani took office in August 2013.

His first visit took place in November 2013 to sign Iran-IAEA Cooperation Framework Agreement.
