Rouhani: All parties must abide by Security Council Resolution 2231 to revive and preserve nuclear deal

Iranian President Hassan Rouhani called on all parties concerned with the nuclear agreement to abide by the implementation of UN Security Council Resolution 2231 in order to revive and preserve the agreement.

During his meeting in Tehran today with Irish Foreign Minister Simon Cowney, Rouhani said that the activation of the comprehensive joint action plan regarding the “nuclear agreement” as an international multilateral agreement depends on lifting sanctions imposed by the United States on Iran. It is also based on the full  implementation of all parties concerned with the nuclear agreement of their obligations towards the agreement. He confirmed  the failure of the American policy to “impose the illegal embargo and to exert maximum pressure” on the Iranian people, as new Washington officials admit this failure.

Rouhani expressed Iran’s readiness to cooperate with international organizations to settle crises in the region, stressing that holding talks on the basis of mutual respect, away from the policy of threat or pressure, is the best way to address the problems between Iran and Europe.

Rouhani indicated that his country is still determined to cooperate with the International Atomic Energy Agency despite the suspension of the additional protocol.

On the other hand, President Rouhani called for strengthening relations between Tehran and Dublin in all fields, especially economic and commercial, and utilizing the available capabilities.

For his part, the Irish Foreign Minister stressed during the meeting that the withdrawal of former US President Donald Trump from the nuclear agreement was a “historic mistake”. He considered that the new US administration intends to return to the agreement, pledging that his country would play a role to facilitate the implementation of the comprehensive joint action plan and Resolution 2231 as a non-permanent member of the UN Security Council during the next two years.

The UN Security Council unanimously adopted in 2015 through Resolution 2231 the comprehensive action plan that the signatories to the nuclear agreement reached in July of the same year. But the previous US administration announced on May 8, 2018, Washington’s withdrawal from the agreement and the re-imposition  of sanctions against Tehran in defiance of the will of the international community and as violation of international decisions.
