“Restoring Syrian Heritage and Reviving Local Communities” workshop to be held Sunday at Dubai 2020 Expo

The Syrian pavilion in the Dubai 2020 Expo is due tomorrow to host a workshop on restoring Syrian heritage and reviving local communities.

The 2-day workshop is organized by the Syrian pavilion in cooperation with the Syrian Trust for Development. International experts, specialists and representatives of non-government organizations working in the field of preserving cultural heritage will take part in this event alongside heads of archeological missions that helped discover and enhance the distinguished world heritage in Syria.

The workshop will review in details the current situation of the Syrian cultural heritage sites and the local communities living around them. Focus will be put on the six Syrian heritage sites placed on UNESCO’s list of world heritage in danger, with the aim of discussing priorities and cooperation to implement the restoration plans.

 Rebuilding archeological sites in Syria and restoring its social and economic fabric needs long-term mobilization of resources as well as expertise in the domains of preserving and renovating heritage, archeology and socio-economic development, a statement by the organizers said, clarifying that the aim of the workshop is to provide solutions, suggestions and necessary resources for restoring the distinguished world heritage in Syria.

Debates during the workshop will witness the participation of heads of international organizations, including the Agha Khan Fund for Culture, UNESCO’s Regional Heritage Center, the International Center for Preserving and Renovating Cultural Assets, the UN Development Program, the International Centre for the Study of the Preservation and Restoration of Cultural Property (ICCROM) and the International Council on Monuments and Sites.

Syria signed UNESCO’s World Heritage Convention in August, 1975. Six Syrian historical sites have been included in the list of world heritage in danger. These sites are Damascus old city, Bosra old city, Palmyra, Aleppo old city, Krak des Chevaliers, the Castle of Saladin and the old villages in the north of Syria.
