Restoration works begin at the archaeological Al-Muhammas market in Aleppo old city

The Syrian Trust for Development, in cooperation with Aleppo Governorate and City Council, the Directorate of the Antiquities and Museums and Agha Khan Foundation for Culture, began restoration and rehabilitation works at the Al Muhammas market in the old city of Aleppo.

The importance of the market stems from its location and the fact that it is a link between eight markets.

Director of the Communities Unit at the Syrian Trust for Development in the Old Aleppo Minaret, Ahmed Kubba, explained that the role of the Secretariat in any project held in the Old City is presented within three areas, including the societal one, through communication with shop owners, and electing a committee to facilitate market matters with the concerned authorities in restoration operations and service agencies, in the field of legal support, where the Legal Response Program works to secure all necessary documents in the market for free, and solve legal problems related to real estate ownership documents, and in the economic field, where support is provided through loans.

The Director of Implementation in the Old City Directorate of the Aleppo City Council Hossam Halabi stated that the market was subjected to significant damage as a result of the terrorist war, with the damage rate reaching 80 percent.

Halabi added: These works are being carried out with trained national cadres and expertise working at high pace to restore the market as it was in terms of the specifications of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organization.
