Restoration project of Al-Omari Mosque in Daraa is nominated for the “ICCROM-Sharjah” Award for Good Practices in the Conservation of Cultural Heritage

The restoration project of the Omari Mosque in Daraa city was selected by the ICCROM Regional Centre in Sharjah to be included in the list of projects nominated for the ICCROM-Sharjah Award for Good Practices in the Preservation of Cultural Heritage, out of 51 projects submitted for the award.

According to the head of the Department of Antiquities in Daraa, Dr. Muhammad Khair Nasrallah, the Omari Mosque project was selected from among 18 projects on the shortlist of the best projects, as the shortlist included projects from the United Arab Emirates, Bahrain, Tunisia, Saudi Arabia, Syria, Oman, Palestine, Qatar, Lebanon, Libya, Egypt and Yemen

Nasrallah added that the winners of the fourth cycle of the award will be announced during a special ceremony to be held in Sharjah in late November of this year. He explained that the award program highlights the quality of the preservation process involved, the technical skills and the social impact of the project, explaining that the restoration work of the Omari Mosque in Daraa al-Balad is a prominent example of the efforts made to preserve the cultural and historical heritage in the region

It is noteworthy that the Omari Mosque has great historical value, as it was built in the seventh century AD by Caliph Omar bin Al-Khattab during his visit to the Levant. It is among the oldest mosques in Syria, and prayers are still held in it to this day
