Reopening Border Crossings between Syria and Iraq Boosts Economic Ties

DAMASCUS, (ST)- Deputy Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Faisal al-Mikdad has stressed that  reopening the border crossings between Syria and Iraq would immunize the two countries against dangers and boost economic ties and trade exchange in a way that meets the needs of the Syrian and Iraqi peoples.

Al-Mikdad was speaking during his meeting on Sunday with Ambassador Oday al-Khairallah, Head of the Neighboring Countries Department at the Iraqi Foreign Ministry, and the accompanying delegation.

The deputy minister affirmed the importance of enhancing bilateral relations in the political, economic and cultural domains, expressing Syria’s appreciation for Iraq’s support for Syria in its war on terrorism.

 Al-Mikdad hailed continuous coordination between the Syrian and Iraqi armies in confronting Daesh terrorist organization and in eliminating other extremist takfiri groups in both countries.

According to al-Khairallah, the Iraqi delegation’s visit to Syria aims at maintaining Iraq’s coordination with friendly and brotherly countries, including Syria.

He affirmed the importance of integration between the two countries in different fields, noting Syria’s importance for Iraq, particularly because it is vital place for meeting the requirements of economic development in Iraq.
