Relief Affairs issues statement on situation in Palestine since October 7th

The Ministry of relief affairs has released a statement on the situation in the Palestine territories, including the occupied West Bank, Jerusalem and the Gaza Strip since October 7, 2023.

The report details situation as the following:

Gaza Strip

o Reported Casualties as of 28 April 2024

  • 34,356 Palestinians are murdered.
  • 77,368 Palestinians are injured.
  • More than 4,000 Palestinians were arrested in Gaza.
  • 491 Health workers were killed.
  • 67 Civil Defence staff killed while on duty.
  • 141 Journalists and media workers are murdered.
  • At least 252 aid workers are murdered (246 nationals, 6 foreigners).
  • Around 17,000 Children are unaccompanied or separated (Lost at least a parent).
  • Health:

▪ 11 Hospitals partially functioning (5 in north and 6 south of Wadi Gaza).

▪ 26 Hospitals are out of service.

▪ 6 field hospitals are functional (4 in Rafah and 2 in Khan Younis).

▪ Around 20% of primary health care facilities are functional.

▪ More than 712,000 Cases of acute respiratory infections

▪ More than 380,000 Cases of diarrhea.

▪ 33% (8 out of 24) of UNRWA health centres are operational.

▪ More than 1 million children are in need of mental health and psycho-social support.

▪ Proliferation of skin diseases, as well as psychological ailments.

  • Food Security:

▪ 265,000 People are facing crisis levels of food insecurity.

▪ 854,000 People are facing emergency levels of food insecurity.

▪ 1.1 Million people are facing catastrophic levels of food insecurity.

▪ 60-70% of meat and dairy-producing livestock killed or prematurely slaughtered.

  • Nutrition:

▪ 28 Children died because of malnutrition & dehydration.

▪ 31% Of children under the age of two in northern Gaza suffer from acute malnutrition.

▪ 10% Of children under the age of two in Rafah suffer from acute malnutrition.

▪ More than 50,000 children are estimated to be acutely malnourished.

  • Education:

▪ 625,000 Students with no access to education.

▪ More than 6,417 students and around 300 educational staff were killed.

▪ More than 80% of 563 school buildings have been directly hit or damaged.

▪ Around 60% of school buildings (320 out of 563) used as shelters have been directly hit or damaged.

  • Shelter:

▪ 1 Square meter of average space per person in IDP shelters.

▪ 41% Of shelters lack sufficient ventilation.

▪ 57% Of shelters were affected by rain and water infiltration.

▪ 150-155 UNRWA shelter installations.

▪ 1.7 million persons are internally displaced.

  • Water and Sanitation:

▪ One out of three water pipelines coming from Israel is operational, only at 72% of its full capacity.

▪ 83% Of groundwater wells are not operating.

▪ All wastewater treatment systems are non-operational; one of them is partially working.

▪ No access to clean water in the northern governorates.

▪ Two out of three main water desalination plants are partially functional.

▪ 57% of assessed WASH  ( the provision of water , health care, hygiene, and environmental cleaning infrastructureall parts of a facility) facilities were damaged/destroyed.

  • Reported Damages:

▪ More than 60% Of residential buildings.

▪ More than 80% Of commercial facilities.

▪ At least 3 churches and 239 mosques were destroyed.

▪ 155 health facilities.

▪ 164 UNRWA installations.

▪ 126 ambulances.

o Labor Force:

▪ In Gaza, a staggering 200,000 jobs have been lost.

▪ One hundred projects supported by the Palestinian employment fund have come to a standstill.

▪ Following October 7th, 9,500 Palestinian workers in Israel were relocated to the West Bank, facing displacement.

▪ 18,500 Gazan workers were prohibited from working in Israel.

▪ 3,000 Workers are arrested in Israeli prisons.

The West Bank and Jerusalem

  • 491 Palestinians murdered.
  • 4,692 Palestinians injured.
  • More than 8,200 Palestinian arrested including:

o 272 Women

o More than 500 Children

o 45 Journalists

o 3,661 are in administrative detention.

  • 14 Arrested Palestinians were killed while being in Israeli prisons.
  • 1,758 Palestinians are displaced from their homes.
  • 803 Structures were demolished by Israeli Forces.
  • 26 Donor funded structures were demolished.
  • 46 Communities are at risk of displacement.
  • Following October 7th, 193,000 Palestinian laborers in Israel were prohibited from working, constituting 22% of the total labor force in the West Bank.
  • The cessation of Palestinian labor activities resulted in an estimated financial loss ranging between 2.5 to 3 million Israeli shekels.
  • Projections indicate a stark rise in unemployment rates, potentially escalating from 13% to 38%.
  • Approximately 25% of jobs, totaling 208,000 positions, have been lost as a consequence.
