Qatar launches initiative to supply Syria with gas to support electricity sector

The Chargé d’Affairs of the Qatari Embassy in Syria, Khalifa Abdullah Al Mahmoud Al Sharif, announced a Qatari initiative to provide natural gas to Syria via Jordanian territory with the aim of contributing to the generation of 400 megawatts of electricity.

During his meeting with the Minister of Electricity Omar Shaqrouq at the Deir Ali power plant in Damascus countryside, Al-Sharif stressed that the initiative comes in implementation of the directives of the Emir of Qatar, Sheikh Tamim bin Hamad Al Thani, with support from the Qatar Fund for Development, and in cooperation with the Jordanian Ministry of Energy and Mineral Resources and the United Nations Development Program (UNDP). The UNDP will supervise the implementation stages.

In turn, Minister Shaqrouq expressed his gratitude to the State of Qatar for this initiative in the light of the poor electricity situation that Syria is suffering from, noting that the Deir Ali station will be supplied with 2 million cubic meters of natural gas per day, which will contribute to generating an additional 400 megawatts of electricity, which is part of Syria’s need, which is estimated at approximately 6,500 megawatts.

The Minister pointed out that the supplies will increase the daily electricity supply hours by 2 to 4 hours, which will positively impact the daily lives of citizens and support vital sectors in the country.

He explained that the gas supplies will be transported via the Arab Gas Pipeline, which passes through Jordanian territory.
