Putin: We will continue supporting the Syrian government in the fight against terrorism

Moscow – Russian President Vladimir Putin asserted that Russia will continue fighting the terrorist organizations in Syria and supporting the Syrian government to that effect.

During a ceremony on Thursday to honor the Russian military personnel who participated in the Russian military operation in Syria, Putin said the Russian aerospace forces’ work in Syria is good and effective, SANA reported.

He recalled that Russia’s decision to start an operation in Syria came upon a legitimate request from the Syrian government, noting that the Russian aim has been to support the Syrian army in its legal fight against the terrorist organizations.

President Putin made it clear that his decision to reduce Russian forces in Syria was agreed with President Bashar al-Assad, “who knew our plans in advance and backed them,” adding that the decision came after the work of the Russian forces in Syria has decreased following the cessation of hostilities agreement in the country.

He affirmed that Russia will continue providing Syria with military equipment, weapons, training and intelligence help as well as direct assistance in military tasks through the Russian forces that remain in Syria.

He added that S400 and Pantsir air defense systems will continue combat missions in Syria, explaining that Russia will use its air defense means operating in Syria against any targets that are considered a threat to it.

Nobody has the right to violate Syria’s airspace, said Putin.

The Russian President said he appreciates President al-Assad’s position and his sincerity about dialogue and the peaceful option.

He pointed out that the groups that are breaching the cessation of hostilities agreement will be excluded from the agreement’s list.
