SOCHI, (ST)- Russian President Vladimir Putin has stressed that the political solution of the crisis in Syria, after the launching of a UN-supported internal political process, can serve as a model for resolving other crises in the region, noting the need that settlement be achieved through diplomatic mechanisms in which the use of force is an extreme exception.
In a statement during the plenary meeting of the annual Valdai Discussion Club on Thursday, Putin said that the terrorists in Syria have been dealt a heavy blow and most Syrian areas have been liberated from terrorism despite some parties’ doubts and attempts to hinder counterterrorism efforts.
“We have defeated global terrorism in Syria and managed to foil the return of thousands of head choppers to our country and other neighboring states,” he pointed out, according to SANA.
Putin called for an international cooperation to confront the serious threats posed by terrorism. He also called for creating an organization for security and cooperation in the Gulf region with Russia, China, the EU, the U.S. and other states aiming at easing the tension in this region and at observing security and freedom of navigation.
