Putin: Russia Managed to Take Important Steps toward Ensuring Peaceful Settlement in Syria

MOSCOW- Russian President Vladimir Putin today stressed that Russia has recently managed to take a number of important steps toward ensuring a peaceful settlement in Syria and countering international terrorists there.

Addressing foreign diplomats at the Kremlin on Wednesday, Putin said “the support provided by Moscow to the legitimate Syrian government helped prevent the collapse of the state’s institutions and avoid massive civilian losses”.

“Thanks to the successful actions of the Russian Aerospace Forces and the Syrian army, it was possible to free a number of towns, including Palmyra. In total, Syrian forces, backed by Russian aviation, were able to free some 400 towns and eliminate thousands of terrorists, including from Russia and other CIS countries,” the president noted, according to Sputnik.

He added that Russia’s cooperation with the United States and some other countries have contributed to launching the political process to solve the crisis in Syria. He pointed out that the international community can achieve tangible results when working collectively in accordance with the international law and within the framework of the UN core role.
