Putin, Merkel discuss situation in Syria

MOSCOW, (ST)- Russian President Vladimir Putin and the German Chancellor Angela Merkel  discussed during a phone conversation on Saturday the situation in Syria, particularly in the northeast of the country.

President Putin reiterated the need to respect Syria’s sovereignty and territorial integrity and to take into consideration the interests of all the spectra of the Syrian society.  

A statement issued by the Kremlin today said that Putin and Merkel “focused on the situation in the northeast of Syria. The Russian president emphasized that long-term and stable stabilization in the Syrian Arab Republic might be possible only if based on respect for the principles of the country’s national unity and territorial integrity.”

 In addition, both leaders agreed that it was crucial to promote the process of political settlement in Syria, particularly by launching the meetings of the constitutional committee.
