Putin, Iraqi PM ExchangeViews in Connection with Operation to Liberate Mosul

Moscow – Russian President Vladimir Putin and Iraqi Prime Minister Haider al-Abadi exchanged opinions during a phone conversation in connection with the operation of the Iraqi government forces to liberate the city of Mosul from militants of the Islamic State terrorist organization, the Kremlin press service reported Tuesday.

The conversation was held on the Iraqi side’s initiative.

“Substantial exchange of views was held in connection with the Iraqi government forces’ operation to liberate the city of Mosul from ISIL militants,” the statement said.

“Vladimir Putin wished successes to the Iraqi army and its allies in the achievement of the set task. The Russian president expressed support to the efforts of the Iraqi authorities to eradicate the hotbed of international terrorism, to ensure sovereignty and territorial integrity of the country,” it said.

Besides, the press service said, the Russian president informed al-Abadi of Russia’s steps to de-escalate the situation in Aleppo, including plans to impose a humanitarian pause for unhindered departure of civilians and militants from the city.
