Putin calls for construction of road linking St. Petersburg port with Arabian Gulf

Russian President Vladimir Putin called on all interested countries to participate in the project to establish a multimodal transport road (north-south) linking the Russian port of St. Petersburg with the Gulf region to be an example of broad international cooperation.

Novosti news agency quoted Putin as saying during a meeting with old and current workers on the Baikal-Amur road dedicated to commemorating the fiftieth anniversary of the start of construction of the highway: “The north-south road must become an example of broad international cooperation, to form new logistical routes for the purpose of accelerating economic and social development for the Countries of Eurasia and the Global South,” calling on all interested countries to participate in this project.

The Russian President pointed out that there is another area of Russian-Azerbaijani cooperation today that corresponds in size and historical importance to the Baikal-Amur road, to develop the north-south road that connects the northern sea route to the Gulf.

In May last year, Russia and Iran signed a joint cooperation agreement that includes building a railway linking the port of Astara to the city of Rasht in northern Iran, which is considered an important step in the field of completing the North-South International Road project linking the Russian port of St. Petersburg and the Gulf region.
