Prompt Separation of US-Oriented Armed Groups from “al-Nusra Front” Needed: Lavrov

MOSCOW — Russian Foreign Minister Sergei Lavrov and US State Secretary John Kerry on Monday made a phone conversation to discuss possible interaction in the fight against terrorism in Syria, the Russian Foreign Ministry said on Monday.

Lavrov stressed the importance of the prompt separation of the US-oriented armed groups from Nusra Front, which had ties with al-Qaeda and was carrying out attacks under the disguise of the so-called moderate opposition.

“The situation in Syria, including the possibility of the Russian-US interaction in the fight against terrorist organizations operating there, has been discussed,” the ministry said in a statement.

The provision of supplies for the terrorists through the border with Turkey is unacceptable, the Russian foreign minister noted.

The talks have been held on the US initiative.
