Press conference in Baghdad between the Foreign Ministers of Iraq and Syria

Foreign Minister Mr. Asaad Al-Shaibani said, “We are in Baghdad at a moment when we reaffirm the unity between Syria and Iraq and emphasize the deep ties between our two brotherly countries.”

Speaking at a press conference with his Iraqi counterpart, Fuad Hussein, in Baghdad today, Al-Shaibani added, “Our destinies are shared, and both countries must stand against threats and foreign interventions they are facing. We are also ready to cooperate with Iraq in fighting ISIS because Syria’s security is interconnected with Iraq’s security.”

He continued, “The goal of our visit is to enhance trade exchange between the two countries and remove obstacles hindering this process. Opening the borders between our nations will be a key step in strengthening relations.”

He added, “We are one people and part of the Arab nation, and we must continue strengthening our relations, not just as governments but also as peoples, to achieve a better future.”

Al-Shaibani pointed out that the road ahead will not be easy, but he expressed confidence that Damascus and Baghdad will emerge from this phase stronger than before.

For his part, Iraqi Foreign Minister Fuad Hussein stated, “The Syrian people, like us, have suffered from the policies of the Ba’ath Party and have been in continuous struggle to rid themselves of the authoritarian and one-man rule system.”

Hussein emphasized the importance of good neighborly relations and non-interference in the affairs of other nations, stating that Iraq’s experience could be beneficial for Syrians in addressing security challenges.

He praised the formation of an investigative committee regarding the events on the Syrian coast, expressing hope that it would yield results that serve peace and stability.

He highlighted the significance of stability in Syria, as it directly impacts Iraq’s situation, and wished the new Syrian government success.

The Iraqi Foreign Minister reaffirmed the importance of historical ties with Syria and discussed the development of economic relations between the two countries to ensure mutual benefits for both peoples.

He welcomed the agreement to integrate the Syrian Democratic Forces into the institutions of the Syrian Arab Republic and hoped that it would bring positive outcomes for Syria.
