BUCHAREST, (ST)-President Traian Basescu of Romania has reiterated his country’s support for Syria in the confrontation of terrorism and extremism.
Basescu’s remarks came during his meeting on Saturday with Patriarch of Antioch and All East for the Greek Orthodox Patriarch Youhanna X Yazigi who is visiting Romania.
President Basescu stressed to the Patriarch that Romania will spare no effort to convey the truth of what is really going on in the region in general and in Syria in particular to the European public opinion.
Patriarch Yazigi briefed the Romanian president on the general situation of Christians in Syria and Lebanon. He hailed Romania’s support for attaining a peaceful political settlement to the crisis in Syria, stressing the role Romania can play in European circles and asserting that only peace in the region can protect all.
Yazigi criticized the international community’s double standard policy toward human rights and condemned its silence towards the case of the two abducted Aleppo bishops, Boulos Yazigi and Yohanna Ibrahim.
He affirmed that the Christians are essential component in the region and that they will continue to stay in their homelands despite difficulties.
