DAMASCUS, (ST)- President Bashar Al-Assad on Monday received Senior Aide of the Iranian Foreign Minister for Political Affairs Ali Asghar Khaji and the accompanying delegation.
Talks during the meeting dealt with the situation in Syria, developments of the political process in the country as the date of the meetings of the Constitutional Committee on Syria in Geneva is approaching.

“Syria is going ahead with this process despite attempts by some parties to divert the committee from its tasks and goals and to change its work mechanism,” President al-Assad stressed.
The two sides discussed ways to enhance cooperation between the two countries in order to confront the blockade imposed by the United States and its allies on Syria. They also discussed possible options for facing the impacts of this blockade with the help of friendly and allied countries as well as with all who reject the US piracy practiced under different pretexts to suffocate the Syrian people.
The Iranian official reiterated the importance of deepening economic cooperation between Syria and Iran to confront this unfair blockade.
During the meeting, the Iranian delegation congratulated the Syrian people and leadership over successfully completing the recent parliamentary elections.
Khaji affirmed that holding these elections at this time proves the Syrian people’s adherence to their land and state and their keenness to participate in important constitutional duties despite all the circumstances they are going through.
Earlier, Deputy Premier, Minister of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates Walid al-Moallem and Khaji discussed the political process in Syria as well as the situation in the regional and international arenas.
Talks between the two officials also dealt with the strategic bilateral relations between Syria and Iran which are witnessing continuous development in all domains, a development that enhances the ability of the peoples of the two countries to confront common challenges, overcome the difficulties imposed by the coronavirus pandemic crisis and face the repercussions of the economic terrorism being practiced by the United States and its allies on both countries.
The two sides agreed on continuous coordination and consultation on different developments and events.
