Damascus – President Bashar Al-Assad, Secretary General of the Baath Arab Socialist Party (BASP), on Saturday chaired the meeting of the Party’s Central Committee. The meeting aimed at discussing the proposal submitted regarding the preparations for holding the elections to choose the party’s representatives at the upcoming enlarged meeting of the Central Committee, during which members of the new Central Committee of the party will be elected.
The president made an instructional speech in which he stressed the importance of the meeting in changing and renewing the work system not only of the Baath Party, but the society and the state. He pointed out that the elections might not be a major step in this path, yet it is a necessary and important step by one of the oldest parties which continued to the present day in the Arab homeland.
“The elections will reflect the type of relation among the Baathists themselves on the one hand and the relation between the Baathists and the society on the other hand. The positive results of these elections will be useful and the negative ones will also be useful as they will constitute an alarm to figure out the mistakes and try to correct them,” the President said.
He clarified that the submitted proposal has been the result of deep discussions between the party’s leadership and its cadres and institutions, pointing out that the elections are a step that must be taken in the right direction and through which positive and negative points can appear so that positive points can be consolidated and the negative points can be changed.
In his speech, President Al-Assad focused on three points; the first has to do with expanding the participation in electing the leaderships. The second concentrates on overcoming the problems resulted from the negative interventions and blocs with the aim of enhancing awareness, performance and commitment, while the third point focuses on forming a committee of non-candidate members to supervise the elections, with the aim of consolidating the honesty of these elections to achieve a great national goal based on commitment, awareness and education. The aim is also to enable the party work and institutions to present working papers and produce some ideas that serve the state, the society and the party and to contribute to the national policies, the president pointed out.
President Al-Assad’s speech was followed by a dialogue with members of the Central Committee and secretaries of the Baath Party branches in the Syrian governorates and universities, on organizational, political and social issues as well as on issues related to the party, the state and the society with the aim of achieving a better future.
