With the participation of President Bashar Al-Assad and Mrs. Asma Al-Assad, the National Museum in Damascus witnessed on Wednesday evening an event to celebrate the 106th Anniversary of Martyrs’ Day.
The celebration, which was held by the Ministries of Defense and Culture, included a number of families of martyrs and their outstanding sons, representatives of the army and armed forces, holders of medals of merit, directors of martyrs’ offices in the governorates, members of the diplomatic corps, and representatives of the external media.
General Ali Abbas, Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Army and Armed Forces and Minister of Defense delivered a speech in the celebration ceremony. He affirmed that martyrdom in our society is a renewable culture present in the conscience of every honorable patriot who believes that the homeland can not be preserved without sacrifices and pure blood must be shed in defense of its sovereignty and independence, and that our proud people have raced to seek martyrdom.
“Good will come to us from the heroes who defend their homeland and their people and from the patience of their families,” General Abbas said.
General Abbas highlighted the glory and eternity of the memory of martyrs who summed up the values of life and its glorious deeds by one act, which is martyrdom for the sake of God and the homeland. President Lieutenant General Bashar Al-Assad, and Mrs. Asma Al-Assad gave the sons of our righteous martyrs attention and took care of their affairs, believing in the greatness of the sacrifices of their fathers.
The Deputy Commander-in-Chief of the Army and Armed Forces continued: “Our proud people have raced to seek martyrdom as they have fought many battles of struggle against the colonialists. This is not strange to a people with a civilization that is deeply rooted in history and who were raised up on the love of freedom and dignity. Such people did not hesitate for a moment to offer their most precious possessions in order to make their homeland free, proud, and independent. Martyrdom is a culture that we inherited from our grandfathers and we pledged to adhere to it and take it as an approach, a way, and a goal.”
General Abbas said: “We are absolutely certain that an army that follows up its brave commander, fighters in their positions, visits them on the first lines of fire, shares food with them and looks at their morale, is an army that does not know the meaning of defeat, but just victory.”
The Minister of Defense added: “A people whose president, along with his honorable family, visits the families of the martyrs and the wounded in their homes in all Syrian villages and towns and always receives them and listens to their affairs and is keen to follow their affairs will never be defeated.”
Minister Abbas concluded by saying: “Long live Syria with its steadfast sons, valiant army, courageous leadership. Mercy and immortality for the souls of our righteous martyrs, the most honorable of the world and the noblest of human beings.
