Poladian on Armenia Independence Day: Armenia Welcomes Any Political Initiative to Restore Peace, Security to Syria

DAMASCUS- The Armenian Embassy in Damascus on Wednesday held a reception ceremony at the Damascus-based Dama Rose Hotel marking the 25th anniversary of Armenia Independence Day.

In a speech delivered during the party, Armenian Ambassador in Damascus Arshak Poladian said that Armenia’s independence in 1991 in a referendum was the only choice of the Armenian people which have adhered to their independence and sovereignty throughout history, SANA reported.

Ambassador Poladian indicated that despite the serious difficulties, the siege imposed by Turkey and the conflict with Azerbaijan, over the past years, Armenia has witnessed positive developments and significant progress in the social and economic life.

He added that his country builds its relations with the countries and nations of the world on the basis of mutual respect and common interests.

He shed light on the notable developments witnessed by the Syrian-Armenian relations over the past years in the political, trade, scientific, cultural and other domains, pointing out that the historic relations between the two countries have been rapidly developing since the visit of President Bashar al-Assad to Armenia in 2009 and the visit paid by Armenian President Serzh Sargsyan to Syria in 2010.

The Ambassador indicated that about 60 agreements, protocols and memorandums were signed between the two countries thanks to the efforts exerted by the officials of the two countries over the past few years in all domains.

Poladian said that his country has followed up the bloody events in Syria, and it has many times expressed serious concern regarding the catastrophic situation in it as a result of the violence and the terrorist attacks, affirming that his country has always welcomed any initiative that would lead to restoring peace and security to Syria soonest possible.

He called upon all parties to the comprehensive dialogue and the national reconciliation, hoping that peace and security will return to Syria.

Assistant Foreign and Expatriates Minister Ayman Sousan, who attended the ceremony, told SANA that the Syrian-Armenian relations are “historic and deeply-rooted”, indicating that the Armenian people are inseparable part of Syrian national texture.

Sousan added that the Syrians and the Armenians have suffered from the same type of genocide at the hands of the same killer who adopts the arrogant Ottoman approach.

He indicated that Armenia is adopting a firm and clear stance regarding the aggression launched against Syria and it deeply sympathizes with the suffering of the Syrian people.

Many senior Syrian officials attended the ceremony, during which a number of the political, cultural and media figures and a number of the Armenian figures were honored.
