People’s Assembly Elects Hammoudeh Sabbagh as Its New Speaker

DAMASCUS – The People’s Assembly on Thursday elected Hammoudeh Sabbagh as new Speaker of the Assembly.

Earlier on the day, the Assembly of the second legislative term held its fifth session of the fifth ordinary round chaired by its Deputy Speaker, Najdat Anzour for electing its new Speaker.

Sabbagh  won the absolute majority with 193 votes, according to SANA.

 Other nominees for chairing the Assembly were: Nidal Hmaidi, Ahmad Mar’i and Waddah Murad, who won 4, 10 and 3 votes, respectively.

On July 20, the Assembly issued a resolution discharging Dr. Hadyiah Abbas from her post as Speaker with a majority of member votes.
