Pedersen welcomes new Syrian administration’s assurances on state-building on comprehensive principles

The UN Special Envoy for Syria, Geir Pedersen, welcomed the clear and repeated assurances from the leadership of the new Syrian administration that the new Syria will be for all Syrians and will be built on collective and credible foundations. The UN News website quoted Pedersen as saying in a press statement: “I saw a real convergence between the expectations of Syrians, the commitments of the caretaker authorities, and the basic principles of UN Security Council Resolution 2254 issued in 2015.”

The UN Special Envoy expressed his appreciation for the pledges he received to cooperate and consult closely with the United Nations on all steps related to the Syrian-led and Syrian-owned transition, and expressed his aspiration to do so, and to work positively with the Syrian administration.

Pedersen also expressed his gratitude to all the Syrians he was able to meet, to share their views at this critical time, explaining that there is a common conviction among all the Syrians he met about the importance of the success of the political transition, and that the cornerstone of this is their full involvement in shaping the future.
